The role of Community Participation in building confidence and independence - True Ability NDIS Provider Melbourne

Ever wondered how Community Participation can directly support you to build more confidence and independence?

Community Participation falls under the Core Supports category in the NDIS scheme, which exists to support NDIS participants to live a better quality of life and build capacity towards various goals that they have set.

As a result, our participants increase their confidence and capacity for being social, attending local activities, and developing their skills. This is all through the assistance of our support workers.

What do NDIS support workers do?

Support workers are rostered to assist you with services you purchase from NDIS service providers (such as Helping Solutions). This can include daily living activities, personal care, and in the case of Community Participation, accessing your community.

1) Community Participation fosters social connections

Building meaningful connections (such as friendships, network connections, and even romantic relationships) is just one of the many goals our participants have. But many of our participants come to us with a level of confidence and independence that makes it challenging to accomplish this.

Through Community Participation, participants are supported to meet new people and establish common interests through events and community activities (such as social sailing events, local art and craft workshops, and sport groups).

Over time, and with practise, this develops their social abilities and their confidence to engage with new people in public spaces.

2) Community Participation builds practical life skills

On its own, increasing capacity for independence is a huge goal that many participants have. Community Participation massively supports this overarching goal because attending activities, classes and events provides skills development opportunities.

Participants can practice their social skills in public settings, get better at time management, and even solve problems in real time. These are all important and key skills in developing capacity to live as independently as possible.

3) Community Participation enhances mental and emotional wellbeing

Finally, Community Participation is incredibly important to support participants with feeling connected to their friends and family and strengthening their sense of belonging in the community.

As a result, this reduces feelings of isolation and loneliness, which can easily occur when people don’t leave the house very often.

Being part of a local group, volunteer organisation, or even a sports team also massively contributes to their confidence, emotional wellbeing and self-worth.

Who qualifies for NDIS support?

Having an NDIS plan is a required pre-requisite to accessing supports and services offered by NDIS providers (including Community Participation supports).

If you don’t yet have an NDIS Plan, the first step is to assess your eligibility. The National Disability Scheme website has more information on this process.
